BibliophilePretensions […The Infected one takes yet another stab at appearing witty]

Today I suddenly found myself a’thinking about that pathetic pretension of pretending to be reading certain books. Why would one do such a thing? Why would one let oneself be found out, snoring behind the open pages of an upside-down Pynchon? Is it really just post-modern showmanship and the need to present the self in a certain intellectualish light? The way I keep doing on this blog, time and time again, to ill effect? Perhaps.

But there is also the power of the book: the sheer density of knowledge and paper and the abolition of time of which the written word is the densest signifier. If one gives into it, initially one will find oneself running of to the library, then, as the possessive impulse takes over, to the bookstore… and in the terminal stage one will gladly label oneself a bibliophile, a literary poseur. Self-conscious, well-read, not totally fraudulent but going in that general direction [sort of Good Old Neon-ish but not all the way to the core, where it counts].

Anyway, in this spirit I took the following pictures. Which also renew my loving dilettantism with arrested or abolished time, this time around in the form of photography.

this cat, always doing the surreal on the fly, very enjoyable [status: fake reading]
